West Highlands and Winter Frosts

I open the back door to let the dog out. A gust of freezing air barrels in and the ground glitters in moonlight. It's going to be a beautiful frosty day in a few hours.

In a previous life, at this point, I would have left home to drive up the Highlands in this weather - or even gone the night before and camped or slept in the car - a more heroic and less domestic life than I lead now. Now I have become one of those Scots who never visits the West Highlands. Astonishing as it may seem, there's plenty folk who live in Scotland and will travel the world for their holidays, but not drive a few short hours north and west.

Rum and Eigg from Loch Ailort:

A pity because when the West Highlands want to, they can really put on a show at this time of year, as I was reminded looking through old photos. For some reason I reckoned this wasn't worth posting a few years ago. Now I look at it and ache for a Highland adventure.

In the West Highlands:

Yes, it's an effort to get up here. But do you know what?

West Highland alpenglow:

It's worth it.
